Garlic was found in the lungs of a patient with shortness of breath
63-year-old Recep Arslan, who lives in Çobanlar district, was taken to Afyonkarahisar Health Sciences University Hospital when his complaints such as cough, inability to swallow and breathing increased.
Arslan, who was found to have a mass in his lung during the examinations, was taken into bronchoscopy and it was determined that the cause of his complaints was garlic.
The hospital's Chest Diseases Specialist Assoc. Dr. Aydın Balcı and his team successfully removed the garlic that had escaped from Arslan's trachea into his lungs.
Balcı said that his assistants Yaşar İnkaya and Yunus Ardıç saw a mass in the lung after evaluating the patient.
Explaining that they took the patient for bronchoscopy, Balcı said:
"Before the procedure, we re-evaluated the patient's complaints. The chest pain, which had been going on for about 6 months, started to get worse. The cough attacks that did not go away were at a level that kept them awake at night. They applied to the emergency services. We went into the procedure thinking that the patient had a mass. We saw that the moving object was garlic. The patient had injected garlic into his lungs 6 months ago, and his quality of life decreased after that day. When we removed the garlic, he started breathing easily."
Recep Arslan also stated that he has been swallowing raw garlic for two years for "healing".
Emphasizing that he had a difficult time with increasing complaints of cough, inability to swallow and breathing, Arslan said, "I was having a hard time breathing and cough attacks were increasing. Now I am comfortable. I was happy when the garlic came out. We thought it was a mass." he said.
