Inactivity during long journeys increases the risk of clots
Uzun yolculuklarda hareketsizlik pıhtı riskini artırıyor

Stating that remaining inactive for a long time can slow down blood circulation in the leg veins, Altay stated that this situation can pave the way for the development of deep vein thrombosis, especially in people in the risk group.

Explaining that clots formed in the legs can reach the heart through circulation and then to the lungs, Altay emphasized that this can lead to serious consequences.

Stating that the veins in this area may have circulation problems because the legs are immobile, Altay said, "These clots that form in the immobile legs can reach the heart and from there to the lungs, causing a disease that we call pulmonary embolism, which can cause significant deaths." he said.

Stating that it would not be correct to give an exact time in terms of deep vein thrombosis, Altay said that the general acceptance is that journeys of 4 hours or more constitute a risk factor.

Pointing out that this period may vary depending on the person's health condition, Altay said, "Shorter durations may also be effective for the risky group. Longer durations may not cause any problems in a young individual. However, the general acceptance is that journeys of 4 hours or more are considered a risk factor for the development of deep vein thrombosis in the legs." he said.

Stating that long trips for touristic purposes have increased in recent years, Altay stated that, in parallel, they have observed an increase in travel-related coagulation disorders and pulmonary embolism cases.

Stating that pulmonary embolism is one of the important causes of death in hospitalized patients, Altay noted that although there is no epidemiological data on the region, these cases are encountered in people who travel long distances, as Thrace is one of the routes frequently used by expatriates, especially in the summer months.
