Robotic heart surgery accelerates patients' return to daily life
Robotik kalp cerrahisi hastaların günlük yaşama dönüşünü hızlandırıyor

While robotic cardiovascular surgery started to be applied at Karadeniz Technical University (KTU) Farabi Hospital, two patients from Rize and Gümüşhane were operated on for the first time with the method.

KTU Faculty of Medicine, Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, Lecturer Prof. Dr. Ahmet Coşkun Özdemir said that one of the most important advantages of robotic surgery is minimizing surgical trauma.

Özdemir stated that they operated on two patients during the week with the method that was recently started to be applied in the hospital, and stated that thanks to robotic surgery, areas that are difficult to see in open surgeries can be viewed more closely.

Özdemir noted that robotic surgery is performed only at KTÜ Farabi Hospital in the Black Sea Region, so patients from different provinces also come to the hospital.

Stating that robotic surgery facilitates the postoperative recovery process of patients, Özdemir explained that patients experience restrictions in their daily activities such as lying on their side and driving for a while due to the cutting of the sternum in open heart surgeries.

Özdemir continued his words by pointing out that these restrictions can be reduced with robotic and minimally invasive surgery methods:

"The aim here is to reduce the patient's pain and suffering due to the incision. We do not want the patient to lie on his side or drive for 1.5-2 months after the sternum is cut. We can eliminate such situations. The discharge time is shorter. A patient who is bypassed with a minimally invasive and robot can go home using his own car. After going home or immediately after leaving the intensive care unit, he can lie on his side in his bed. The patient can return to work in as little as a week and 10 days."

Pointing out that all these are the advantages of robotic and minimally invasive surgery, Özdemir said that the operations were carried out by Cardiovascular Surgery Specialist Assoc. Dr. He noted that they carried out the project with an experienced team, especially Mehmet Ali Yürük.
