Vital advice for those who will go on long journeys in hot weather
Explaining that changes such as sweating and fluid loss occur in the body as the temperature rises, Tokuç said that this situation may cause an increase in heart rate and deterioration in the attention mechanism.
Pointing out that traffic activity increases during holiday periods, Tokuç pointed out that the risk of accidents is higher with the addition of loss of attention due to the effect of heat.
Tokuç stated that with the heat, drivers become distracted more easily and the risk increases, especially in long-term, monotonous driving.
Referring to the studies on the effect of temperature on driving performance, Tokuç said, "In experimental studies, drivers' attention and safe driving times were measured at different temperatures from 30 degrees to 40 degrees. It was observed that the safe driving time of drivers decreased as the temperature increased. The safe driving time, which is 80 minutes at approximately 30 degrees, can decrease to 53 minutes when the temperature approaches 40 degrees." he said.
Tokuç emphasized that drivers should be more careful during the summer months, especially between 14.00 and 17.00, when the temperature is highest.
Explaining that reflexes decrease with increasing temperatures, Tokuç noted that there may be an increase in accidents due to distraction and sleepiness during this period.
Stating that drivers should take some precautions for safe travel in hot weather, Tokuç said that vehicle air conditioning is important for driving comfort and safety.
