Watch out for mosquito bites against West Nile virus
Mert said that West Nile virus, which can be carried by mosquitoes, does not cause any symptoms in most people, but some people may experience flu-like symptoms.
Explaining that the virus can be transmitted through wild and migratory birds, Mert stated that mosquitoes biting birds can transmit the virus to people and horses.
Stating that Culex mosquitoes, which play a role in transmission, are also found in Thrace, Mert said that some precautions can be taken to protect against mosquito bites, especially in the evening hours.
Mert said, "Mosquitoes are not active 24 hours a day. They generally become active in the cool of the evening, when it is about to get dark. If possible, avoid going outdoors at those hours, if possible, wear long-sleeved clothes that cover your body, and use protective lotions." he said.
Emphasizing that most of the people infected with the virus do not have any symptoms, Mert noted that flu-like symptoms such as headache, weakness, chills and tremors may occur in approximately 20 percent of them.
Recommending that older people, those with chronic diseases and people with suppressed immune systems should be more careful about mosquito bites, Mert stated that it would be beneficial to eliminate puddles in the garden and the surrounding area that could allow mosquitoes to breed.
Recommending those working in agricultural fields to do their work during daylight hours, if possible, Mert said, "Especially the elderly and people with suppressed immune systems or chronic diseases should be careful to protect themselves from mosquito bites. They can apply protective lotions against fly bites." he said.
