284 tons of fuel was saved with the 4th runway at Istanbul Airport
Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu gave information about the 4th main runway at Istanbul Airport, which was put into service with the first take-off permission given by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on September 18.
Uraloğlu stated that the new runway also contributes to reducing fuel consumption and carbon emissions by shortening flight distances.
Drawing attention to the environmental and economic gains of route shortening, Uraloğlu said:
"We examined our records for the period 18 September - 15 October 2026. During this period, standard instrument take-off routes called BARPE, IVGUS, VICEN and RATVU were used in 1475 of the 1738 take-offs from the new runway. Compared to the use of alternative runways in these flights, an average route shortening of 15.2 nautical miles per flight, a total of 22 thousand 453 nautical miles, was achieved. According to the calculations made on the fuel consumption and emission reference coefficients of our Ministry, "We achieved approximately 284 tons of fuel savings and 897 tons of carbon dioxide emission reduction in these flights."
