7,160 pieces of historical artifacts were seized at the border gates in Edirne Edi
In the first operation, İpsala Customs Enforcement Smuggling and Intelligence Directorate teams referred a truck arriving at the İpsala Customs Gate from Türkiye to Greece for X-ray scanning in line with risk criteria.
Upon detection of suspicious density during the scan, a detailed search of the vehicle revealed a total of 5,935 cultural assets, including 5,685 coins, 130 arrowheads, 100 rings and 20 various accessories, hidden in the food and equipment cabinet on the trailer.
In the second operation, another truck that wanted to leave Greece was directed to X-ray scanning during routine checks at Kapıkule Customs Gate.
During the checks, 1225 coins, which were not declared to the customs and were considered to be historical artifacts, were seized in the vehicle, where suspicious density was detected.
While the historical artifacts seized in both operations were confiscated, a judicial investigation was launched regarding the events before the relevant chief public prosecutor's offices.
In the statement, "Our Customs Enforcement teams of the Ministry of Commerce continue their anti-smuggling efforts with effective risk analysis, targeting and control activities in order to protect our cultural heritage and prevent the smuggling of historical artifacts. Our fight continues uninterruptedly to protect our cultural heritage and prevent our historical artifacts from being taken abroad illegally." statements were included.
