A resilient city model will be implemented in Ayazağa
Ayazağa'da dirençli şehir modeli hayata geçirilecek

Following the flood disaster, which recorded the highest rainfall values in 84 years in Istanbul, the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change continues its investigation and damage assessment studies in the region.

Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Kurum, who went to the region after the disaster, organized a coordination meeting with the Deputy Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Ömer Bulut, Governor of Istanbul Davut Gül, Deputy Mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Nuri Aslan, Mayor of Sarıyer Oktay Aksu, President of Mass Housing Administration (TOKİ) Levent Sungur, President of Urban Transformation Hakkı Alp and managers of other institutions, as well as the citizens affected by the flood.

Minister Kurum listened to the demands of the citizens at the meeting and received the opinions of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Deputy Mayor Aslan and Sarıyer Mayor Aksu.

At the meeting where the needs to be done in the region were discussed, an agreement was reached on the rapid completion of the reclamation projects of Cendere (Kağıthane) Stream and Ayazağa Stream. Along with the stream improvements, it was decided to implement a resilient city model to prevent similar disasters in Ayazağa.

In this context, Minister Kurum stated that the transformation project will be carried out under the coordination of the Urban Transformation Directorate to meet all the needs of the citizens, on solid ground that is resistant to earthquake and climate-related disasters. The Minister Institution offered transformation to eligible citizens with the "Half of It is From Us" campaign or urban transformation by TOKİ. Beneficiaries who choose one of the two options will reach safe structures in the region.

Minister Kurum, sharing on his social media account about the works to be carried out in Ayazağa, said, "After the flood in Ayazağa, we examined the region on site and listened to our citizens. Our first job is to quickly erase the traces of the flood and return life to normal as soon as possible. On the other hand, we will take permanent steps to avoid experiencing the same scenario again. For this, we want to start the transformation in the region without wasting time. We will establish our Urban Transformation Office, we will receive the requests one by one. We will stand by our citizens who want the transformation, support the process together. "For Istanbul, urban transformation is no longer an issue that can be postponed," he said.

Minister Kurum also drew attention to climate-related disasters and emphasized the vital importance of resilient cities at the Disaster Coordination Meeting held at the Istanbul Governorship Disaster Coordination Center on Thursday.

At the meeting, Minister Kurum said, "We all experience together that 50-year and 100-year flow rates and precipitation calculations are not accurate today. Therefore, we have to act together according to today's conditions and today's needs. Istanbul is the apple of our eye. Any problem in Istanbul is a problem for the Republic of Turkey. It is a matter of national security, we always say it. Adapting to disaster risks and making the city resilient against disaster risks is our obligation, and we must all work together in line with this obligation."
