Minister Fidan: Israel reduces trust in the international system
Minister Fidan made a speech at the opening of the 9th Istanbul Mediation Conference held in a hotel in Istanbul.
Stating that the world is being tested by increasing global insecurity, Fidan said, "Even though peace has been accepted in the region for many years, the people of the region are currently being tested by armed conflicts. In the last few years, multiple conflicts have continued to take place in different parts of the world. Very critical trade routes and sea routes have been affected by this, and ceasefire violations have become routine." he said.
Fidan pointed out that the human cost of this situation is gradually increasing and said, "The United Nations estimates that approximately 1/4 of the world's population lives in conflict zones. Every 12 minutes, a civilian loses his life as a result of these conflicts. More than 100 million people have been displaced by necessity, and unfortunately, approximately 40 percent of them are children." he said.
Emphasizing that the consequences of the humanitarian tragedy are seen much more clearly in Palestine, Fidan continued as follows:
"Here, the invasion in Gaza and the West Bank continues and is met with impunity. The daily violation of the ceasefire by Israeli forces reduces trust in the international system and creates distrust in this regard. Access to humanitarian aid and especially the protection of children should be our priority in this regard. In this context, I would like to emphasize once again that this conflict can be resolved with a fair political solution."
Referring to the necessity of resolving conflicts peacefully and through dialogue, Fidan said, "The speed and scope of conflicts test the capacity of the international system to respond to this, and these transformations transform the international order. But what will emerge as a result is not yet clear. The choices we make today will actually determine this method and this path." he said.
Drawing attention to the three basic principles of "internal dialogue, sustainable mediation and regional ownership" to direct change towards peace and prosperity, Fidan continued as follows:
"Today's crises actually reveal a much deeper problem, which is the loss of legitimacy of the international system. As stated by Mr. President (Recep Tayyip) Erdoğan and Mr. United Nations Secretary-General (Antonio) Guterres, if the rules are not implemented correctly within this framework, institutions lose their credibility and the parties lose trust."
