The election process for the Presidency of the Constitutional Court has begun

While he was serving as a member of the Council of State, Özkaya was elected as a member of the Constitutional Court by the President on December 18, 2014 and started his duty on December 22, 2014. His term of office will expire on December 22, 2026, within the scope of the regulation limiting the duties of the members of the Supreme Court to 12 years.

In this context, in accordance with the internal regulations of the Supreme Court, the process for the presidential election started today, 2 months before the end of Özkaya's term of office.

During the process, Constitutional Court President Özkaya will conduct the election affairs and the place, day and time of the election will be notified to the Constitutional Court members in writing at least 7 days in advance.

Due to the expiration of his term of office, Özkaya will not be able to be a candidate in the election, but he will be able to vote. Other members of the Supreme Court may be presidential candidates.

The candidate who obtains an absolute majority by receiving the votes of at least 8 out of 15 members in the election to be held at the General Assembly will assume the office of President of the Constitutional Court for a period of 4 years.

If no member can obtain a sufficient majority, elections will continue.

Özkaya, who worked as a civil servant in the General Directorate of Land Registry and Cadastre and as a controller in Agricultural Credit Cooperatives, was appointed as an investigative judge of the Council of State in 1993, after completing his internship as an administrative judiciary judge, which he started in 1991. In 2005, Özkaya was appointed as the Constitutional Court rapporteur, to which he was temporarily assigned in November 2004. In 2011, he was elected as a member of the Council of State, and on December 18, 2014, he was elected as a member of the Constitutional Court by the President.
