The eyes of the world are on Türkiye: The countdown has begun for COP31
A historic turning point has been reached in the fight against climate change, the biggest crisis the world is facing. The countdown has officially begun for the 31st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP31), the highest decision-making body of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
The summit, which set out with the motto "The World's Climate Summit is in Turkey. Together for a Cleaner Future", will be held in Antalya between 9-20 November 2026. The summit will last approximately 11 days; Heads of state and government, ministers, scientists, non-governmental organizations and global actors will gather around the common table for a sustainable world.
It is not a coincidence that Antalya was chosen as the city that will host the giant organization. The city's strong international airport infrastructure, world-class accommodation capacity and huge congress centers offer the most suitable ground to host tens of thousands of participants from all over the world.
In addition, Antalya is a strategic symbol because it is located in the Mediterranean Basin, which feels the effects of the climate crisis and the risk of drought most acutely. Holding the summit in this geography directly affected by the crisis will give the decisions a different global meaning.
The fact that Turkey will host this giant organization is interpreted as a confirmation of the country's environmental vision in the international arena and its rising leadership in climate diplomacy.
Türkiye has taken concrete steps in the field of circular economy, especially with the "Zero Waste" initiative, which has become a global brand and is accepted as a model in the world; It is a pioneer of climate-resilient development by combining national policies with global advocacy. While COP31 will reinforce Turkey's leadership, it will also accelerate international cooperation by acting as a bridge between developed and developing countries.
COP summits, which have been shaping the future of the planet since 1995, have previously completely changed global markets and environmental laws with historical decisions such as the Paris Agreement.
Binding decisions that concern all humanity, such as the countries' next-generation carbon emission targets, green transformation steps in energy policies, the scope and distribution of climate finance, and sustainable development models, will be discussed.
