Agricultural workers held a demonstration in Brussels to protect their rights
With the call of the European Federation of Food, Agriculture and Tourism Unions (EFFAT), approximately 200 people gathered in Jean Rey Square near the EU institutions.
Demonstrators, who demanded fair working conditions in the agricultural sector, opposed the weakening or removal of the social conditionality mechanism, especially in the negotiations on the EU's post-2027 Common Agricultural Policy.
The EU's social conditionality mechanism makes public supports provided to agricultural employers conditional on compliance with working life and occupational health and safety rules.
EFFAT states that the practice protects the rights of agricultural workers and contributes to a fair competition environment for farmers who fulfill their obligations.
Some EU member states and political groups want to abolish the mechanism.
