COP31 hosted by Türkiye will focus on climate action

Head of Climate Change at the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, Prof. Dr. Halil Hasar, in his statement within the scope of the preparations for the 31st Conference of the Parties (COP31) to the United Nations (UN) Framework Convention on Climate Change, stated that the conference is an important platform where countries come together, establish dialogue and make joint decisions on the fight against climate change.

Stating that state officials, delegations and negotiation teams from 196 countries will come together in Antalya, Hasar noted that important decisions regarding sustainable development and climate policies will be discussed at the conference.

Pointing out that climate change affects many areas from social life to the economy and the environment, Hasar emphasized that all countries must act together in order for the struggle to be successful.

Explaining that important decisions were made and negotiations were held in the 10-year period after the Paris Climate Agreement came into force, Hasar stated that the implementation of these decisions will gain priority in the next period.

"We have many implementable, negotiated decisions. It is now time to take action. That is why this was called the implementation COP. Let COP31 be the implementation COP. Based on this, we named it 'The COP of the Future'."

Stating that one of the important goals of COP31 is to strengthen cooperation and multilateralism between countries, Hasar stated that the joint hosting process of Turkey and Australia shows that cooperation on climate action is possible between different geographies.

Stating that zero waste, circular economy and reducing methane emissions will also be included in the agenda of the conference, Hasar said that zero waste is one of Türkiye's prominent environmental policies in the international arena.

Hasar noted that Türkiye will have the opportunity to introduce the projects and practices it carries out in the field of environment to the international public through COP31.
