Crowded streets, lonely people: The problem of loneliness deepens in London
Recent research reveals that chronic loneliness affects young adults rather than the elderly in the post-digitalization and COVID-19 period.
According to the "The State of Friendship 2026" report published by the London-based The Great Friendship Project, 67 percent of those in the 18-29 age group in England feel lonely at least once a week. While one in 10 people in the country states that they have no close friends, 70 percent of young people state that loneliness negatively affects their mental health.
In the report, this situation is evaluated as a loneliness arising not from the absence of people, but from the superficiality of relationships. 1 in 4 young adults find it easier to talk to an AI chatbot than a real person.
Kate, whom the AA correspondent interviewed on the streets of London, said that she felt lonely from time to time, and that this feeling could change depending on the conditions of the day and her mood.
Stating that loneliness has become more visible, especially after the COVID-19 epidemic, Kate said, "We have lost our ability and self-confidence to communicate with other people, especially after COVID-19. The digital age is now very dominant. As a society, we have difficulty coping with the awkward or embarrassing moments that occur during face-to-face communication." he said.
Pointing out that people turn to their phones and digital devices to escape such moments, Kate said that overcoming this obstacle will help re-establish real bonds.
Stating that she had previously provided care services to the elderly and closely observed the impact of loneliness on the elderly, Kate said, "Sometimes just having someone come and have tea or coffee with them for just 30 minutes makes a huge difference." he said.
Patrick also said that he knows methods that are good for him when he feels lonely, but not everyone has similar opportunities.
