Flamingos raise their chicks with a nursery system
With the Tuz Lake Special Environmental Protection Area Research, Protection and Monitoring Project of Species and Habitats carried out by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, efforts are being made to keep endangered species alive, to protect them and to pass them on to future generations.
In this context, the flamingo population is being investigated through species monitoring studies in Tuz Lake, which is among the most important wetlands in the world where flamingos hatch.
The coordinator of the project is Prof. Dr. Ahmet Karataş said that they started working on flamingos again this year, and approximately 12 thousand 800 baby flamingos were detected in the census.
Stating that this figure is one of the best values in recent years, Karataş stated that the presence of flamingos in the region is closely related to the state of water resources.
Karataş emphasized that the precipitation in the winter and spring this year was quite better compared to recent years, and said:
"This has a positive impact not only on Tuz Lake but also on the surrounding wetlands. There is a certain amount of water in Tersakan and Bolluk lakes and Kulu Lake, which dried up in the past years. The rains contributed positively to the feeding and breeding areas of flamingos. However, the increase in the amount of water should not lead to complacency. Focusing on more agricultural irrigation in the region may pose a new danger. We need to use water sparingly. Water is the right of not only human beings and farmers, but also all living things in nature. In order to protect their right to life, "We will protect water together."
Explaining that Tuz Lake is one of the most important flamingo breeding areas in the world, Karataş stated that the chicks here are raised with a method known as the "nursery system".
Karataş stated that there are approximately 11 thousand bird species in the world, and about fifty of them use the "nursery system" and continued as follows:
